Some people may not know this, but Midland’s lead singer, Mark Wystrach, loves to surf. There are plenty of places in the world he would love to go surfing, but if he had to pick his top bucket list place, he says, “The Maldives in the Indian Ocean.”
Mark says he hopes to get there before he doesn’t have the chance. “They’re disappearing because of rising sea levels,” he explains. “They say that some of the surf breaks won’t be existent in the next two decades. And it’s just about as far away as I could get geographically from like home. And I’ve just heard that the people are absolutely incredible.”
Mark also loves the idea of the solitude you experience when surfing in The Maldives. He says, “You live on a boat for like two weeks and you don’t even see land. You’ll see these tiny little islands, like out of a dream, where you literally see like a, maybe like 80-yards long island with a couple of palm trees on it, and then just a perfect reef break. And the fishing is incredible, the snorkeling is incredible. Yeah that’s always been on my bucket list.”
Mark’s dreams of surfing in the Maldives may have to wait a while because Midland is currently on tour with Little Big Town. Plus, he says, “It takes a long time to get there and it’s not exactly cheap, so maybe someday if I can afford it you’ll see old Markaroo surfing out in the Maldives.”
Midland’s debut single, “Drink A Little,” was just certified Platinum, for selling more than a million downloads, and if their latest single, “Make A Little,” follows in its footsteps, Mark may soon be able to afford his bucket list surf trip.
