If you read the liner notes on Payton Smith’s self-titled debut EP, you’ll see his name in the credits, not only as the singer, but also as the person who played acoustic and electric guitar and banjo on a lot of the songs in the studio, including his debut single, “Like I Knew You Would.” Payton’s talents on guitar are far beyond his young 20 years, and it seems like he plays almost anything with strings. He says, “I love playing anything with strings. I wouldn’t say that I can play everything with strings I certainly can’t play a fiddle.”
While Payton loves to play on his own songs in the studio whenever possible, he says, “There’s certain things that I leave up to other people because I like having other people sort of put in their opinion on what the song should have. So, while I do play several string instruments, I still don’t consider myself like a pro at it.”
Pro or not, Payton can more than hold his own on a guitar, and could probably give a lot of seasoned pros a run for their money with his skills.
