One of the newest artists on the Big Machine Records roster, Payton Smith, is hitting radio this week with his debut single, “Like I Knew You Would. Payton co-wrote the song with Roddy Belman and Dan Fernandez, and he says, “It sort of started with that guitar riff. And what I love about that song is there’s so many different melodies inside that song, and it’s a very simple storyline. It’s about getting away from the party with, you know, your special someone and just kind of knowing that she was gonna have you feeling that way throughout the night.”
For those who don’t know, young Payton is incredibly skilled on the guitar, following in the footsteps of guys like Keith Urban and Brad Paisley, and so he loves to use the instrumentation of the song to enhance his songwriting. “I just love just painting a simple storyline like that and letting the melody do a lot of the work,” says Payton. “And there’s a lot of cool elements in that track, especially the guitar solo that really captures that live energy.”
“Like I Knew You Would” is one of four songs featured on Payton’s self-titled debut EP, which is available wherever music is streamed or downloaded, and fans will be able to hear him performing some of those songs live when Payton opens for Chris Young on the Town Ain’t Big Enough World Tour 2020, beginning March 26th, with almost 40 dates scheduled through September 26.
