Payton Smith has an EP out right now, featuring his debut single, “Like I Knew You Would,” to help give people a little bit more of a window into what his style of country music is about. If he had to try to describe it, Payton says, “My brand of country music is definitely … I love playing with a lot of live energy no matter what it is. If it’s a really up tempo song I want to try to capture that live energy. If it’s a ballad I want to capture that live energy the same way. So, I try to bring in a lot of, just that energy into the production of songs.”
Besides bringing a lot of energy to his music through his voice and his age-defying guitar playing skills, Payton believes his sound can be traced back to the music he grew up listening to as a kid. He says, I grew up hearing so many things from 90s country to Pearl Jam to Keith Urban – so much genres and subgenres, even in country music, whether it was pop country or whether it was kind of more of a rock country or traditional country. All of it kind of shaped who I am. So, I think I land somewhere in all of those things. I think you’re a reflection of your influence and that definitely, I think, shines on the songs that I put out.”
If you spend some time with Payton’s EP, which is available now, wherever you stream or download music, you will definitely hear the 90s country influence, as well as the Keith Urban and rock influence.
