If there’s one dish Brett Young absolutely cannot stand at Thanksgiving, it’s cranberry sauce out of the can. However, for Brett and his family, Thanksgiving dinner wouldn’t be complete if that perfectly can-shaped blob wasn’t on the table. “My dad‘s mom, my grandma Bonnie – she’s not with us anymore – but grandma Bonnie would always spend a long time massaging the can, so that the cranberry sauce came out in the shape of the can,” explains Brett. And he laughs when he recalls, “One Thanksgiving, she “perfectly got it out onto the plate, and then my dad was giving the blessing, and my uncle Scott started smooshing it up. And my grandma interrupted the prayer because he was ruining the perfect can-shaped cranberry.”
So, while perfectly can-shaped cranberry sauce holds fond memories for Brett, he still says, “I hate that. Fruit on meat never works for me. So, cranberry sauce never makes it on my Thanksgiving plate, ever.”
