CURRENT SINGLE: “How They Remember You”
So many incredible singers, like Chris Stapleton, Dan & Shay and Thomas Rhett, are also songwriters who love to pass songs onto other artists to record. Some artists say it can be a little intimidating to hear a demo of a song sung by someone like Chris Stapleton or Shay Mooney, but Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts says, “It’s always easier when you have a great singer, somebody doing some acrobatic stuff and somebody that can just really do that melody. I’ve just always been affected by great singers.”
The challenge for Gary is figuring out if he really loves the song, or if he just really loves the way one of those guys sounds singing it. “Sometimes you’ve got to really listen through it, because you don’t know if the song is great or the singer is great,” says Gary. “But to hear somebody that’s really singing it and doing it, and I feel it, then it’s just kind a like, ‘Oh, okay. Oh yeah.’ And then I kind of live with it for a little bit and then I go, okay, well I would’ve done that here and done that here. Then hopefully I get a chance to go in there and try to take what they did and try to make it my own, you know.”
It’s not surprising that Gary isn’t intimidated by great singers on demos, considering he is such an incredible vocalist himself.
