Riley Green has been making music and playing shows for many years, but it’s just recently that he’s begun to have radio success with his debut single, “There Was This Girl,” sitting pretty in the top five on the charts and headed toward #1. But even with his success, when Riley needs an honest opinion or someone who will not just tell him what they think he wants to hear, he says, “One of my old football coaches was definitely that guy for me for a long time. He’s actually moved to Virginia and he’s coaching. He’s got a little girl now and he’s married so he’s not around here as much. But any of my buddies from back home.”
Some of Riley’s friends knew him when he was still working side jobs to bring in some money while he chased after music. For instance, he says, “My buddy Jason that’s on tour with me now, he used to frame houses with me. So I would go and play in front of a stadium of people and then go back and I was still just regular guy working construction with him. So those type of guys keep me grounded. Their honest opinion is something that means a lot to me because they’re not just telling me something that I want to hear.”
Every artist will tell you, having that core group of people who will keep it real and tell it like it is, no matter how successful they get in their career, is one of the most important things for them to have.
