Most people consider Sheryl Crow a pretty cool musician, singer and performer, but Sheryl, who just released her new album, Threads, says her two sons, 9-year-old Levi and 12-year-old Wyatt, do not share that opinion. When it comes to having ‘cool cred’ with her kids, Sheryl says, “Oh my gosh, no,” because to them, she’s just mom who takes them to school and mom who goes to their ballgames.
Sheryl did share a funny story about how she probably embarrassed the heck out of her oldest son recently. She said, “Yesterday we did a taping and I had to rush from there to ‘Meet the Teacher Night’ at school, and I was wearing a pair of leather jeans and I had on false eyelashes. I was totally done and I walked into the school and all I could think was my 12-year-old would be mortified.”
One cool thing for Sheryl is that her sons have gained a greater appreciation for what she does for a living. “Four years ago I made a record called Be Myself, and the kids were in the studio a lot while I was making it and they saw the work that goes into making a record,” she says. “And they actually enjoyed it, and it’s really changed everything for us because now when we go on the road they understand that it’s not just me going out and playing music. They see what went into it, that it actually is my work and they really like it.”
Even though Sheryl just made a critically acclaimed album with fellow superstars like Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, Sting, James Taylor and Chris Stapleton, her kids still don’t consider her cool. Sheryl says the one thing that her sons think is cool about her career is, “They like bringing guitars out onstage. So in that way they think I’m cool because it allows them to come out on stage, you know. But other than that, mmm … not so much.”
