Sugarland has always written and recorded their own songs, so when they agreed to record “Babe,” which was co-written by Taylor Swift and Pat Monahan of Train, it was a big deal. Kristian Bush admits, “We love cover songs. We want to do them the best we can. And in this case, it was just a heightened sense of anxiety for me, cause it’s somebody else’s baby. I can only imagine what it would be like to get it back, and we knew [Taylor] was a fan of what we do, and what if we’d have sent her back something terrible? Oh my gosh, how would you even talk about it? So it made us want to work like seven times harder.”
Besides wanting Taylor to be pleased with how they recorded her song, Jennifer Nettles says, “Not only that, but her fans are ‘feracious’,” which we think is a hybrid of ferocious and voracious, “So, if we screwed up a Taylor Swift song, can you imagine? Please.”
Not only did Taylor love Sugarland’s version of “Babe,” but she was so happy with it she offered to add her voice to the song, and she came up with the concept for the video.
