There’s been a lot of discussion about the quality of country songs being written and recorded these days. Even BMLG President and CEO Scott Borchetta has said, “We can’t keep talking about Fireball and Coors Light and having the tailgate down, etc. So we will task our writers and artists to dig a little deeper.”
Jaren Johnston of The Cadillac Three says he and his band mates are totally up for the challenge of digging deeper, as evidenced by their latest single, “White Lightning.” He says, “There’s always gonna to be songs about tailgates. There’s always gonna be songs about pretty girls and cold beer, that’s just the beauty of this genre’. I do think it’s important to have songs that dig a little deeper.”
Jaren cites fellow artists like Kacey Musgraves and Eric Church who have a way of putting a unique spin on lyrics, and he says, “I think we are diggin’ a little deeper and I think there’s always gonna be those few writers in the genre’ that really step out and take that on as a mission.”

I think Kacey Musgraves doin’ a great job of that. I think Eric has a really cool way of spinnin’ lyrics too. I did dig a little deeper when I co-wrote a song called ‘Raise ‘Em Up’ that Eric and Keith Urban did, as well as ‘Meanwhile Back At Mama’s’ and I think it’s important to have songs like those two…and our new single ‘White Lightning’ that kind of, you know, tell a story without comin’ out and just sayin’ the things. They put a cool spin on it. So, I think we are diggin’ a little deeper and I think there’s always gonna be those few writers in the genre’ that really step out and take that on as a mission.”

The Cadillac Three are currently playing shows in the United Kingdom. On Tuesday (6/16) the guys are back in Nashville holding a release party at the Science Center for their song “White Lightning” and the brand new music video.
