(AUDIO) The Cadillac Three Runs A Song Through The Band’s Filter Before Giving It Away

The members of The Cadillac Three are prolific songwriters, who not only write a lot of their own material, but also have songs recorded by other artists. As they work to put together their own albums and choose songs they want to record they’re definitely more selective about which songs they write that they give away to other artists. Jaren Johnston says, “In the past [Neil] wrote ‘Payback’ for Rascal Flatts and they’d already cut it before I even heard it, but we would’ve cut that. I think also I’m glad it was a hit for Eric (Church) and Keith (Keith Urban), but ‘Raise ‘Em Up’ would have been a great one for us now. I don’t think when I wrote that song a couple years ago, I don’t think that we were that band yet.”

Ultimately, the guys say the most important thing is to stay true to their own sound and to remain authentic, and not just cut songs they think might be a hit. Jaren says, “These days whenever we finish one we run it through the old TC3 filter to see if that’s somethin’ that I could sing every night and is also believable to fans that kind of came up with this from the beginning. You wanna grow, but you don’t wanna change too much and you don’t wanna say things that you don’t mean. We’ve been really honest, I think, the whole time and our songs are very believable.”

The Cadillac Three’s latest single is called “Drunk Like You,” which was co-written by TC3’s Jaren Johnston and Neil Mason with Jesse Frasure.
