Although The Cadillac Three’s debut single, “The South,” sings about a certain geographical area, lead singer Jaren Johnston says it’s really a song for everybody, no matter where they live in the country. “That’s why at the end of the chorus I say, ‘even if you’re up north, c’mon down, c’mon down, oh’ to try and tie everybody in. It’s more about just a way a livin’ rather than, I mean granted I do name every SEC conference state in this song.”
Jaren compares it to when he first heard Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Albama.” He says, “I didn’t live in Alabama but I thought that was a badass song. I just kinda wanted to write the kids these days, give ‘em somethin’ like a southern anthem that could be that to them. You know?”

The Cadillac Three – The South 2
Jaren Johnston – “Yah, but also it’s like, that’s why at the end of the chorus I say, ‘even if you’re up north, c’mon down, c’mon down, oh’ to try and tie everybody in. It’s more about just a way a livin’ rather than, I mean granted I do name every SEC conference state in this song. You know, it’s just more like, when I sat down and wrote it, was tryin’ do somethin’ that kids would listen to. Like first time I heard ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, I didn’t live in Alabama but I thought that was a badass song. I just kinda wanted to write the kids these days, give ‘em somethin’ like a southern anthem that could be that to them. You know?”
