Last Friday (3/3), The Mavericks released the 10th Anniversary Deluxe edition of their career-changing album, In Time.  In 2012, the band reunited after a decade-long hiatus from making music, and as Paul Deakin, Raul Malo and Eddie Perez explain, they went into the studio not knowing what to expect, and emerged with an album that would not only change their career, but change their lives.

Paul Deakin – “As I heard it, we were going out to do a string of 20 shows, and do a little reunion tour. I’m like, well, let’s see about that. Let’s get together, and got together with Raul for dinner, and he had this in his back pocket.  ‘Oh, by the way, I have a record, and Scott Borchetta wants to put it out, and let’s go to the studio.’ I’m like, oh, okay. This is a totally different thing. But had we just gone out and done that, then that’s kind of what it would’ve been, that band from the 90s doing a reunion tour. But this just completely changed everything internally, and I think externally, how we were viewed. Cause it was a critically acclaimed record, as well as successful, and we probably wouldn’t still be here if that record hadn’t come out.”

Raul Malo – “For sure. It changed the trajectory in a profound way. Had we not made this record, you’re right, I think we would’ve played a few festivals, we would’ve played the old hits, and we’d still be that band from the 90s. This record made sure that that didn’t happen.”

Eddie Perez – “I feel like the record launched us into almost a different career. It just put us in a whole ‘nother mind frame of what we were capable of, too, as a band. And In Time kind of initiated that change.”

Not only was In Time critically acclaimed, but it did well commercially and was wholly embraced by The Mavericks’ fans, which has allowed the band to continue to tour over the last ten years, and lead singer Raul Malo speaks for all the guys when he says “thank you” would be an understatement of the gratitude they have for their fans.

The Mavericks – 10 year message to fans :39

Raul Malo – “What we feel most of all towards the fans that embraced In Time when this came out, is thank you, you know, is gratitude. Because that album and that support has given us a second career, a second chance at this. And bands that have been doing this for a while don’t get to do this. They don’t get to reinvent themselves or do something different just cause they want to. And that kinda relationship that we’ve been, I guess, inspiring with our fans, has been really special. I mean, we’re here against all odds. Pretty amazing that it started back up with this record, with In Time.”
