Thomas Rhett’s latest album, Tangled Up, contains some more traditional sounding songs, like his four-week #1 hit, “Die A Happy Man,” but then it also features some pretty progressive sounding songs that definitely push the boundaries of country music. Some people consider Thomas to be on the cutting edge of country, being a trendsetter and creating styles that are being imitated in other people’s music. Thomas says, “It’s really cool, but it’s also terrifying at the same time because even though you are one of those dudes that is doing something that hasn’t been done … I guess the closest comparison I can relate to is like Ronnie Milsap, and still this is way different than Ronnie. But, it’s cool in the fact that it’s nice to see your friends trying to, or wanting to, record some of the same songs that you’re writing, or songs that you would record.”
While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Thomas says the scary part about being at the forefront of musical trends is that, “You also don’t want to think that you are on the brink of doin’ somethin’ awesome and then you just [laughs] epically fail. You know what I’m sayin’? So, I think the fear of the unknown with that is probably the biggest thing, but it is fun to be doin’ somethin’ that no one’s really done.”
