(AUDIO) THOMAS RHETT EXPLAINS 14 WRITERS ON “VACATION”

If you look at the writing credits on Thomas Rhett’s new single, “Vacation,” you’ll see there are FOURTEEN co-writers, which seems almost silly, but Thomas explains it was all about trying to keep things legal.  “When you look at somebody like Pharrell (Williams) and Robin Thicke getting sued because of a drum pattern, it makes you scared to death to put something that remotely sounds like something.  So when we finished writing Vacation, you couldn’t deny that the first thing you thought of was ‘Low Rider’.  So the best thing to do in these situations is just to go straight to the people that wrote that song and be like, ‘Hey we wanna make you cowriters on this song.’”

Fortunately, the writers of “Low Rider” agreed to take a writing credit so that Thomas could record and release the song with no worries, but there were seven writers on that song, then Thomas co-wrote “Vacation” with two writers from L.A., plus there were four guys that helped build the instrumental track, so in the end the song ended up with 14 co-writers.  Thomas laughs and says, “No one’s going to make any money off that song, but it’s one of my favorite, most fun songs on the record.”

Thomas Rhett – Vacation 14 writers  :37

“When you look at somebody like Pharrell and Robin Thicke getting sued because of a drum pattern, it makes you scared to death to put something that remotely sounds like something.  So when we finished writing Vacation, you couldn’t deny that the first thing you thought of was ‘Low Rider’.  So the best thing to do in these situations is just to go straight to the people that wrote that song and be like, ‘Hey we wanna make you cowriters on this song.’  So there’s like seven people in that band.  So seven times the other- and I wrote that song with two LA guys, so there were three of us in the room, but there was also four other ones that had a hand in building that track.  So, I mean, no one’s going to make any money off that song, but it’s one of my favorite, most fun songs on the record.”
