Thomas Rhett tends to write songs that are very personal and very specific to his life, and there was a time he wondered if it was the right thing to do, but now he realizes it’s the key to his success. “I do think that a lot of it is attributed to, I think, just being yourself, being very unashamed to be who you are. And especially as an artist, It’s tough to be vulnerable and to write songs about your life. When you put them out you go, ‘Does anybody really care about that? And I think what I found out is the more personal the songs that I write, you’re really talking to a lot of the population.”
While every detail in Thomas’ songs may not be relatable to every listener, the general experiences are more universal than he first realized. “I think a lot of the time as a dad, or even like, I look at Lauren and you’re sitting there with like, a newborn you’re going, ‘Does anybody know what we’re experiencing right now?’ Well, there’s a million people that do. There’s a billion people that do. And when you can put that into a song form that can evoke an emotion and bring people into that, I think that is songwriting 101.”
Whether it’s his latest song, “Be A Light,” which was born from some of the negativity Thomas and his wife Lauren were experiencing on social media, or “Remember Youi Young,” which was very personal to Thomas about his kids, his wife, his high school buddies and his faith, Thomas says, “To be unabashedly yourself and do things different, not because you’re just trying to be different because that’s actually who you are, I think that doesn’t go unnoticed.”
