CURRENT SINGLE: “Slow Down Summer”
When Thomas Rhett was writing and recording songs for his new Where We Started album, one of his goals was to make songs that would get his young daughters’ stamps of approval. They were a lot of the inspiration for the more up-tempo danceable songs on the album, like “Church Boots,” “Anything Cold,” “Paradise” and “Somebody Like Me,” because Thomas says, “Kids attach to melody and beat so much more sometimes than they attach to lyric. And so, they really are such a good gauge. Like, we go downstairs in the basement and have dance parties weekly. And what they gravitate toward is always so fascinating to me. Tempo 100%, and repetitive words or melodies.”
While the girls probably don’t realize they’re part of a tiny focus group, Thomas is always paying attention to what draws them in when it comes to music. “Like, they love ‘Sucker’ by the Jonas Brothers,” Thomas says. “And so, I started dissecting that song and I was like, ‘What is it about that?’” They love ‘You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful’ by One Direction.”
Armed with that kind of intel, Thomas says when he was making Where We Started, “A lot of the record I am trying to make songs that they are going to wanna be like, I love that song.”
We’re guessing when Thomas gets that kind of feedback from one of his daughters, that they love one of his songs, there is no higher compliment in the world.
