Thomas Rhett is a prolific songwriter, and even though he records a lot of his own songs, like his latest single, “Life Changes,” there are other songs he writes that he knows are not right for him to record but would be great for another artist. Thomas’ dad, Rhett Akins, has written a ton of his songs for other people and Thomas says he’s learned a lot from his dad about how to be successful at it. For instance, he says, “Once you get to, especially once you have certain cuts on certain artists, you start to realize what they like and what they don’t like. And then if an artist is wanting to branch out and they’re asking for this kind of song, you know how to write that song for that person. Like, you know, I’ve heard dad pitching songs to people like Jason Aldean and dad’ll go in there and actually try to sing it like Jason so that when Jason hears the demo it’s already kind of in his head, like, ‘That’s me and that’s great, let’s go do it.’ And so he’s got it down to a science.”
Even though Thomas just released his Life Changes album eight months ago, he’s already been doing a lot of writing, presumably for his next album, and possibly for other artists as well.
