These days, if someone wants to share a group of songs with a friend or loved one, it’s all about putting them in a playlist, but Thomas Rhett remembers when he used to give and receive actual mixtapes. “If you know my wife and I’s story, you know that we’ve been to school together since we were in elementary. And in high school we both used to make mixtapes for each other all the time, and it was probably like a bunch of terrible boy bands that don’t exist anymore. Third Eye Blind was on there, Will Smith was on there.”
People would spend hours carefully curating the perfect mixtape for someone – picking out the perfect songs, getting the order just right, creating the perfect label for the cassette or CD. Not only did Thomas enjoy creating mixtapes for Lauren, but he and his buddies would also share mixtapes with each other, whether it was workout jams or driving music or songs to get hyped to, and Thomas admits, “I still actually have my CD binder. It’s filled with nothing but mixtapes from high school.”
