(AUDIO) Tim McGraw Doesn’t Approach Albums With Theme In Mind

Tim McGraw will release his new album, Sundown Heaven Town, on September 16th, featuring his latest single, “Meanwhile Back at Mama’s,” and he says when choosing songs, it’s not so much the lyrics or the message of the songs that attracts him, instead it’s all about sound. Tim explains, “What I go into it with is sort of a set of sounds in my head. I don’t know, they’re not even clear because I’m not a real musician. I can play guitar a little bit, I can play piano a little bit, but I’m not like a musician that can sit down and just play you stuff. But I have these sort of thoughts about how I wanna a guitar to sound, or how I wanna piano to sound or how I want a synth to sound.”

Tim says those sounds influence his song choices. “I sorta try to find songs that might lend itself to those sounds. And it’s not that black and white as well because sometimes you find a song that you love and you think, ‘well I can find some of these sounds that will fit it,’ or you find a song that you love and I can come up with sounds that’ll fit it.”

Tim says once the album is finished it’s sometimes interesting to look at the songs he chose and realize there is a common theme, but initially it’s all about the sound he wants the album to have.

“Not really, I mean, what I go into it with is sort of a set of sounds in my head. I don’t know, they’re not even clear because I’m not a real musician. I can play guitar a little bit, I can play piano a little bit, but I’m not like a musician that can sit down and just play you stuff. But I have these sort of thoughts about how I wanna a guitar to sound, or how I wanna piano to sound or how I want a synth to sound. So I have these ideas of these different sort of sounds, and then I sorta try to find songs that might lend itself to those sounds. And it’s not that black and white as well because sometimes you find a song that you love and you think, well I can find some of these sounds that will fit it or you find a song that you love and I can come up with sounds that’ll fit it. You know what I mean? But I do have sort of a concept of the way I want it to feel and sound.”
