(AUDIO) Tim McGraw Honors Mom’s Sacrifices In New Album Art

If you’ve picked up Tim McGraw’s new album, Sundown Heaven Town, featuring his latest single, “Shotgun Rider,” you may have noticed an old picture of a young woman in the CD booklet. Tim reveals, “It’s a picture of my mom in there. Mom saw it and she goes, ‘And you did this why?’ I don’t know, ‘cause I just thought it was a cool picture of you.”

Tim explains there’s actually a lot more sentiment behind his decision to include the picture. When Tim’s mom was in high school she always dreamed of being a dancer. She even tried out to be a dancer on a show called Where the Action Is. She was dating Tug McGraw at the time and Tim says, “Two days after she found out she was pregnant with me, it was her senior year in high school, she found out she was pregnant with me and she got a call back to audition for Where the Action Is and she couldn’t do it.” Not only could she not do the show, but Tim says, “She had to drop out of school, they sent her to Louisiana out in the country so nobody could see her bein’ pregnant. You know, the whole routine back then. So to me, that was sort of the moment in time that my mom’s life changed. And to be on my album project and have a picture of her sort of was full circle in a lotta ways. Maybe I helped her fulfill at least vicariously some of her dreams.”

You can see Tim’s mom in the CD booklet for his new album, Sundown Heaven Town, which is available now.

Tim McGraw – mom in album art 1:10
“It’s a picture of my mom in there. Mom saw it and she goes, ‘And you did this why?’ I don’t know, ‘cause I just thought it was a cool picture of you. For me it represents a lot of stuff ‘cause my mom, she worked at a radio station in Jacksonville, Florida, when she was in high school and she wanted to be a dancer and her favorite show was, ‘Where the Action Is’. When she was doing that back there she had a dance troop that she was workin’ with and she had sent off an application to audition for ‘Where the Action Is’ and two days after she found out she was pregnant. When she had met Tug he was playin’ baseball for the Jacksonville Suns, minor league Mets team and they had dated all summer and she ended up gettin’ pregnant. So two days after she found out she was pregnant with me, it was her senior year in high school, she found out she was pregnant with me and she got a call back to audition for ‘Where the Action Is’ and she couldn’t do it because she found out she was pregnant with me. And then she had to drop out of school, they sent her to Louisiana out in the country so nobody could see her bein’ pregnant. You know, the whole routine back then. So to me, that was sort of the moment in time that my mom’s life changed. And to be on my album project and have a picture of her sort of was full circle in a lotta ways. Maybe I helped her fulfill at least vicariously some of her dreams.”
