When it comes to choosing songs to record Tim McGraw is definitely drawn to things that he has lived before, however he says it’s not necessary to have the songs directly mirror his life. “I think everybody role plays a little bit when they listen to music, and it’s no different for me as a singer,” Tim explains. “Certainly parts of it I find that are very literal to my life, and parts of it are metaphorical to my life, or to another life or another situation that I’ve seen, or somethin’ that’s goin’ on in the world.”
In a way, songs can sometimes be like acting not only for Tim as the singer but also for the listener. Tim says, “I don’t think that as an artist that you have to live every single part of what you sing about, but I think you can become a character a little bit. Music to me, and songs to me are mini movies in a lot a ways, and I think when people listen to a song that they run a reel through their mind. They might not necessarily have lived thematically what that song is talkin’ about, but I think they find a way to adapt a part of their life to what that song’s talkin’ about, or sort of superimpose a piece of what they’ve done in their life, or what they think they might have wished they’d a done in their life, and they find a way to live through that vicariously.”
Tim is currently promoting his new single, “Diamond Rings and Old Bar Stools,” off his Shotgun Rider album.

Tim McGraw – role play through music 1:04
“Look, I don’t think that as an artist that you have to live every single part of what you sing about, but I think you can become a character a little bit. Music to me, and songs to me are mini movies in a lot a ways, and I think when people listen to a song that they run a reel through their mind. They might not necessarily have lived thematically what that song is talkin’ about, but I think they find a way to adapt a part of their life to what that song’s talkin’ about, or sort of superimpose a piece of what they’ve done in their life, or what they think they might have wished they’d a done in their life, and they find a way to live through that vicariously. So, I think everybody role plays a little bit when they listen to music, and it’s no different for me as a singer. Certainly parts of it I find that are very literal to my life, and parts of it are metaphorical to my life, or to another life or another situation that I’ve seen, or somethin’ that’s goin’ on in the world. I think as an artist that’s what you try to do, and I think that’s the magic of what music is, that you can do that, and reflect that and be honest about that in a way, and other people can hear it and it does the same thing to them, and it also allows them to create their own story with it.”
