When Thomas Rhett wrote his latest single, “Life Changes,” the lyrics were directly inspired by what was happening in his life at the time he wrote it. “That song is definitely one of those songs that was just like in the moment,” says Thomas, “and kind of just wrote it because that’s what I was going through at the time.”
At that time, Thomas and his wife Lauren were in the process of adopting their little girl Willa from Uganda, and Lauren was pregnant with their second baby girl, Ada. The lyrics for the third verse of “Life Changes” said, “Now Lauren’s showin’ and got one on the way, yeah that’s two into two, hey, what can I say?” But to keep the song updated to reflect his ever-evolving life, when TR released the song to radio in April, he changed the line to “Now there’s Willa, and sweet Ada James, yeah that’s two into two, hey, what can I say.”
And chances are, that isn’t the last of the lyric edits that song will see. Thomas jokes, “I’m going to have to write some new verses, yeah. In five years I’m probably going to be talking about my sixth kid that’s on the way, more than likely.”
For the record, Thomas has said he wants three kids, but Lauren wants at least five, so being a smart husband, TR says that means they’ll probably end up with at least five kids.

“I’m going to have to write some new verses yeah. In five years I’m probably going to be talking about my sixth kid that’s on the way, more than likely. But yeah, that song is definitely one of those songs that was just like in the moment, and kind of just wrote it because that’s what I was going through at the time, and never in a million years thought it’d be a single, and so I’m super excited that we get to put a song like that on the radio.”
