Jennifer Nettles says she definitely pushed herself while making her latest album, Playing with Fire, but it wasn’t something she intentionally set out to do. She says, “I don’t find that I ever go into any project creatively with that—with an objective of sorts. To me, the project presents itself to me and introduces itself to me. So, I don’t really go into it with that other than just trying to show up and present my most authentic self.”
Because Jennifer always tries to bring the best of her musical past and present into the studio and meld them together, she says, “Sometimes, that ends up being, just by the nature of who I am, it tends to sometimes open up doors or push the boundaries within the format and within the genre, but that’s nothing that is ever intentional for me.”
Playing with Fire, featuring Jennifer’s latest single, “Unlove You,” is available now.

Jennifer Nettles – doesn’t intentionally push boundaries :50
“For me, I don’t find that I ever go into any project creatively with that—with an objective of sorts. To me, the project presents itself to me and introduces itself to me. So, I don’t really go into it with that other than just trying to show up and present my most authentic self. Now, me being me, I tend to sometimes I do enjoy stretching and I do enjoy bringing in the best parts of my own, I like to think, the best parts of my own musical heritage and seeing how the meld together and what comes of that. So sometimes, that ends up being, just by the nature of who I am, it tends to sometimes open up doors or push the boundaries within the format and within the genre, but that’s nothing that is ever intentional for me.”
