(AUDIO) MARTINA McBRIDE WAS THINKING ROOTSY AND ORGANIC FOR RECKLESS

When Martina McBride first set out to make her latest album, Reckless, featuring her new single, “Just Around the Corner,” she says, “I kinda had a vision that I wanted it to be a really rootsy, kind of organic sound, but I also tried to just stay open to the songs.”

Through the process of picking songs she did find songs that fit that rootsy feel, but then she says, “A song like ‘Reckless’ came along or ‘Just Around the Corner’ which are a little more Pop-Country and I just couldn’t forsake them or not record them to try to stick to a strict sound. Which is interesting, I think it worked out, because I was worried about that at first, but then somebody reminded me that some of the albums that I’ve made like ‘Evolution’, for example, had a lot of different styles and different colors and sonically were very diverse. So, I think it’s cool now.”

Ultimately, Martina says she feels like she ended up with an album that has something on it for everybody. “There’s stuff that’s more country than I’ve done in the past, there’s the pop country that I’ve kinda been known for, and then there’s a big torchy piano ballad like ‘You and You Alone’, and so there’s a little bit of something for everybody,” says Martina.

Martina McBride – mindset going into Reckless :56
“I kinda had a vision that I wanted it to be a really rootsy, kind of organic sound, but I also tried to just stay open to the songs. So, for instance, I found a song called ‘The Real Thing’ which is very rootsy and organic and kind of what I envisioned the album to be when I started. But then a song like ‘Reckless’ came along or ‘Just Around the Corner’ which are a little more Pop-Country and I just couldn’t forsake them or not record them to try to stick to a strict sound. Which is interesting, I think it worked out, because I was worried about that at first, but then somebody reminded me that some of the albums that I’ve made like ‘Evolution’, for example, had a lot of different styles and different colors and sonically were very diverse. So, I think it’s cool now. I listen to this record and I realize there’s something for everybody. There’s stuff that’s more country than I’ve done in the past, there’s the pop country that I’ve kinda been known for, and then there’s a big torchy piano ballad like ‘You and You Alone’, and so there’s a little bit of something for everybody.”
